Kollektion: Horse Headcollars

A good headcollar earns its place on the hook by the stable door — it's the piece you reach for every single day, so fit, durability and ease of use matter more here than almost anywhere else in your tack box.

Our horse headcollar range covers leather, Biothane, nylon and field safe styles, in sizes from Shetland and foal through to full horse, so whatever you're leading, turning out, or tying up, there's a headcollar built for the job.

Why Choose the Right Headcollar?

A headcollar isn't just a means of leading your horse from A to B — the wrong fit or material can rub, slip, or fail to release in an emergency. Here's what to look for:

  • Secure, adjustable fit — multiple adjustment points at the headpiece and noseband to get a snug, correct fit for your horse's shape
  • Field safe options — breakaway design that releases under pressure if caught on fencing or a gate, ideal for turnout
  • Comfort against the skin — padded poll and noseband options reduce rubbing on horses turned out or stabled for long periods
  • Durability for daily use — built to withstand being left on, knocked about in the field, or used multiple times a day
  • Easy to clean — particularly important for Biothane and synthetic options used in muddy UK conditions

Choose Your Material

Leather — the classic choice for everyday handling and showing. Supple, comfortable against the horse's head, and ages well with proper care. A traditional look that suits most yards.

Biothane — low-maintenance and genuinely weatherproof. Wipes clean in seconds, doesn't crack, fade or rot, and holds up well to being left on in the field day after day. Ideal if you want a headcollar that looks good without the saddle-soap routine.

Nylon — lightweight, durable and budget-friendly. A practical everyday option for yards with multiple horses or ponies to turn out and bring in.

Field safe — designed with a breakaway point that gives way under pressure, reducing the risk of injury if your horse gets caught up while turned out. Worth considering for any horse left in a headcollar unsupervised.

How to Measure

  • Noseband circumference: measure around the head, roughly 5cm below the cheekbone, all the way around.
  • Headpiece length: measure from one side of the headpiece, over the poll, to the other side (or from buckle to buckle along the cheek and headpiece).
  • Height: measured in hands (hh) from the ground to the highest point of the withers.

All sizes are adjustable via the headpiece and noseband buckles for a precise fit. Still unsure? Get in touch and we'll help you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a headcollar?

A headcollar (also called a halter) is a piece of equipment worn on a horse's head, used for leading, tying up, and handling. Unlike a bridle, it has no bit and is designed for control on the ground rather than while riding.

What's the difference between a headcollar and a field safe headcollar?

A standard headcollar is designed for handling and leading. A field safe headcollar includes a breakaway point — usually at the headpiece or a weak-link fitting — that releases if the horse gets caught on something while turned out, reducing the risk of injury.

What materials are headcollars available in?

Our range includes leather, Biothane, and nylon. Leather offers a classic look and feel, Biothane is low-maintenance and fully weatherproof, and nylon is a lightweight, budget-friendly everyday option.

What size headcollar do I need?

Sizing is based on your horse or pony's head measurements and height. We stock sizes from miniature and Shetland through to full horse — check the size guide on each product page, or contact us if you're unsure.

Can I leave a headcollar on my horse in the field?

It's generally recommended to use a field safe headcollar with a breakaway feature if your horse will be wearing one unsupervised in the field, to reduce the risk of injury if they get caught on something.

How quickly will my headcollar be dispatched?

In-stock headcollars are dispatched within 3-5 working days.
